What a Parent Needs to Know About Speech and Language for Primary Grades...

Sound Development:
Most children do not develop all of their sounds immediately when they begin speaking. However, all sounds should develop by a specific age or they may need to be remediated by a Speech and Language Therapist. The following are the ages of mastery by which your child should be able to produce the various sounds correctly.

My child makes his sounds right, but sounds "funny" when he/she talks:

Some kids make their sounds correctly. but sound differently from other kids. A Speech and Language Therapist can help with these problems:

1. Voice Disorders
2. Stuttering


Language Skills:

A child's language development is essential to success in primary grades. Many directions are given verbally and listening and speaking effectively are important to success. Kids who have language needs may not sound different than other children when they talk. However, they may struggle with verbalizing needs or making others understand what they are trying to explain. A child may have difficulties listening or following directions. These skills can be helped by a Speech and Language Therapist.
