Strategic Planning in Highland Community Unit School District
No. 5 is based on the belief that community involvement is necessary
for successful schools. The first Strategic Plan was developed
in 1993 and provided direction for the district in the past 10
+ years. The 2004 Strategic Planning Process began with Jim Burgett
serving as facilitator on July 16, 2004. A twenty-nine member
Strategic Planning Team, consisting of a cross-section of individuals
from the community and the school district, participated in one
and one-half days of Strategic Planning Training to outline the
direction and components of the project. Team members identified
the district's strengths and weaknesses, revised the mission statement,
validated basic beliefs, and set broad parameters for the Strategic
Planning Program. Nine proactive strategies for study and implementation
were also developed. Nine Action Teams will be formed, ranging
in size from twelve to twenty-four members. The members will be
representatives of the school and community. The Action Teams
will develop action plans for the strategies identified for study
by the Strategic Planning Team. The Strategic Planning Team will
then meet to review the plans and take action to accept, reject,
or return them to the Action Team for more study and clarification.
After the revisions are made they will be presented again to the
Strategic Planning Team for acceptance or rejection.
