Saturday Scholars
Saturday Scholars is a gifted program that meets the four Saturdays in February each year. Students attend three sessions with top notch professionals currently working in a wide variety of fields and take a field trip to places such as Alton Lock and Dam, University of Illinois Engineering Day, or the Practical Anatomy Workshops at St. Louis University. Students are selected by different criteria depending on the yearly program. Enrollment in honors classes and/or class rank are often criteria for invitation. Depending on the level of enrollment, sophomores through seniors are usually invited. Not all students who are invited are permitted to attend. Enrollment is limited and selection is on a first come, first serve basis. Students who attend all four sessions receive a certificate and a patch from the Regional Office of Education, and those who attend three sessions receive a certificate. The Saturday Scholars program is a cooperative effort with eleven other schools in Madison and St. Clair counties. It is an opportunity for gifted students at Highland High School to mix with gifted students from other schools and learn from working professionals.

Student Council
The HHS Student Council serves all students in the high school. Membership is by student initiative, and students wanting to work hard and get involved in school functions are encouraged to join. Each year, the Student Council plans and holds the Homecoming celebration. Our activities include planning and running the coronation, choosing decorations and decorating the gym, planning lunchtime competitions, organizing a Faculty Coronation, and planning and running the Homecoming Pep Rally. This leads to countless committees and unlimited responsibilities. Other activities in recent years include: Christmas Adopt-a-Family, a Bear Drive to earn money to buy bears for children in hospitals in Highland and St. Louis, a compatibility test as a fund raiser for the Highland Food Pantry, a Christmas Stuff the Stocking fund drive for needy families, and a Shamrock Week and a Crazy Legs competition to benefit St. Jude's Hospital. The President and Vice President are chosen by the Council members, and the other positions are filled by petitions through the sponsors. The HHS Student Council is a member of both the Kaskaskia District of Student Councils and the Illinois Association of Student Councils. Our members have held offices on the District Executive Board for the past four years. All members are eligible to attend several different workshops throughout the year, and a few lucky students are able to attend the State Convention in the spring. In 2000, Highland High School planned and hosted the District Convention. If you want to have fun, meet new people, and be in on what's happening, join us for a great time.
