Highland Primary students recently experienced our annual field trip to Cahokia Mounds. Our learning began with the award winning film “City of the Sun.” The video gave students information about “America’s First City,” detailing the daily lives of the Mississippian Culture that lived there. Students were then able to explore the museum which provided artifacts and more information about the tribe. From walking through a model of a typical village to learning about hunting habits, mound building, diet, entertainment and more, students learned even more. Next, the kids walked around the museum grounds to see a variety of mounds that still exist. Finally, they walked up Monk’s Mound. This 100 foot high earthen mound is the largest man-made earthen mound in North America. The tiring 154 steps to the top made the kids very hungry. The trip finished up with a picnic lunch right down the road at a local park.
