Highland High School is forever grateful for such an amazing faculty and staff who go above and beyond the call each day. You arrive early, stay late when needed, and pour your heart and soul into teaching and learning. You listen to concerns, put others before yourself, and lend a hand to those in need. You support our mission to be the best school we can be and are talented in so many ways. Whether you’re an administrative assistant, support staff, counselor, psych or social worker, faculty member, custodian, or nurse, each of you make a significant impact to support our students, our school, and our community each and every day. You empower others to be great and it truly shows. We appreciate you, we value you, and we are forever grateful for your dedication and service to Highland CUSD #5. Thank you HHS Faculty and Staff for a job well done. We miss you all.

Attention Class of 2020 graduating seniors! Your Google Apps for Education account made by the school district will be closed and removed starting on June 30th. Please be very aware of this date and what you need to do if you wish to save any email, documents, or other work you may have saved in your Google Apps for Education account. If you are using your school account to communicate with colleges or other institutions, be sure to let them know another email address ahead of time, so you don't lose important communications. Be proactive by ensuring that college offices and other post high school entities have your permanent personal email account. You can choose to transfer all or some of your school account via one of two methods: Use the account transfer option to move content from your school account to your personal Gmail account. https://takeout.google.com/transfer Use the account export option to save the entire contents of your Google Apps account, or just the parts of your account that you want to keep. Exports are contained in an archive file that you can open and work with. https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout Any work that you do not choose to save will be irrevocably lost after June 30th. We cannot make exceptions to this, and we cannot retrieve any accounts or work after this date. It is solely your responsibility to determine if you wish to keep any work from your school account, and to export it before June 30th. We recommend you use this on or near the last day of classwork. You may instead choose to manually export individual documents from your Drive, if you wish. However, do NOT use the Google share documents feature with your personal account as the shared link will no longer work after June 30th. HCUSD5 Technology Department

Good Evening Bulldog Nation! We wanted to share a video from PAC students who are thinking about you. Hang in there everyone and be strong!https://5il.co/f8k4 More details and specifics regarding the continuation of Remote Learning and End of Year plans will follow soon.
Dear Parents, Staff and Community Members: I hope this message finds you and your families safe and well. Today, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced that remote learning in Illinois will be extended through the end of the 2019-20 school year. Although in-person learning has been suspended for the remainder of the year, at Highland CUSD No. 5, I assure you our entire staff remains committed to learning and engaging with all students through remote learning, as well as continuing with our food distribution program. Like you, we are saddened by the reality that our school community will not be able to reconvene in person this school year due to this public health crisis. So many of you have worked so hard to learn and grow in both the classroom and in extracurricular activities that today’s announcement may feel like a step back. However, the final chapter of this school year hasn’t been written yet. These past few weeks have proven our school community is more resilient, more capable and more compassionate than maybe what we previously realized. I’m confident our collective strength will shine through during the remainder of the school year, and we will emerge even stronger. Having said that, today’s announcement will result in significant and multiple scheduling changes in our district. As this announcement about the end of the school year was just made by Governor Pritzker this afternoon, it will take us a few days to sort out the many schedule details that are on the books, including spring concerts, promotion, graduation, etc. Please be patient as we work as a district to get information to you in the next several weeks. I know this is not the school year that any of us imagined, but I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we have dealt with this unprecedented situation together. This period of Remote Learning offers us new ways to learn and grow, and out of this Pandemic, we will emerge stronger. Plans will be underway soon for the return to in-person learning next school year. It’s important we continue to work together and support our students. I can't thank you enough for all that you are doing as we all work together through this. Sincerely, Michael S. Sutton

The district has scheduled a planning day next Monday, April 13. Students will return to remote learning Tuesday, April 14. Respectfully, HCUSD 5

Good Afternoon HHS Families, Faculty and Staff, I hope you’re doing the best you can with family and friends this weekend. Recent events have been hard on all of us and it’s difficult, if not impossible, to understand and accept the current reality. And that’s perfectly okay right now. The video link below, shared by a parent, depicts how many of us currently feel, especially our students. I encourage you to take a moment to view as a family or by yourself if you are able. https://youtu.be/2OjjWh-8Iv0 We know there is no right or wrong way to feel at this time as we are all handling this in different ways, the best we can. Finally, be patient with each, be strong and courageous, and stay rooted in love. Sincerely, Dr. Chris A. Becker

Please be patient with Highland CUSD 5 teachers and staff as we navigate the engaged learning and distance learning days while school is closed. Teachers, admin, and school staff have been working around the clock to prepare learning opportunities for students in our community. Please thank them for their efforts. If you communicate with them and have questions, please use kindness, empathy, and compassion. As a community, we will do the best we can.
There will be no 6th Hour FTT on Monday, March 16th.
Due to the impending school closure, the high school and middle school parking lots will be barricaded per the direction of the Highland Police Department and Highland CUSD 5. Staring Monday, March 16th at 4:00 PM both parking lots will be closed for the duration of the school closure. All district facilities will be closed as well.
Monday will be a normal attendance day at HHS. Students should bring books and materials as normal. (Some teachers may have already indicated some items are not needed for Monday) Students should take home all materials at the end of the day Monday that are needed to be engaged during the closure. Teachers will review with students at school on Monday regarding distance learning when school is closed.
We are developing plans for a number of situations during the mandatory school closure. Please expect multiple communications over the next few days. We are creating a plan to keep kids engaged to the best of our ability given the circumstances.
ALL ATHLETES AND COACHES: From the IHSA. If you temporarily suspend your spring season, your athletes should not practice or compete with their non-school (club/travel) teams or they will be ineligible for the high school team if and when the suspension is lifted.
Good Evening, With the recent announcement of school closures, HHS will be cancelling all athletics, extra curriculars, and facility use by outside organizations starting tonight, March 13, 2020 - March 30, 2020. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there will be no Spring Fling Dance tonight at Highland High School. Our #1 priority at Highland CUSD 5 is the safety of our students, and unfortunately the safe decision is to cancel the dance. Thank you.
Good afternoon Highland CUSD No. 5 stakeholders, The COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has become the issue discussed in every location across the country at this time. Highland CUSD No. 5 nurses have been diligently working with the Madison County Health Department on preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of exposure and transmission within our schools. Recommendations to use good hygiene such as washing hands, not touching your face, and not reporting to school or work if you experience flu-like (cough, fever, respiratory issues or any other signs of illness) symptoms continue to be the focus for each of us. However, it has become evident that additional measures may become necessary to combat the spread. The purpose of this correspondence is to clarify the district’s position. Many are calling for school closures and suspension of all activities. We do not currently have a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our district or county. Currently, school is one of the safest atmospheres for our nearly 3000 students. This is a very fluid situation and may change even by the time this correspondence goes out. We will prepare for the worst case scenario, but hope for the best. This is why our district staff are working towards an e-learning plan to engage students in the learning process should a prolonged district closure occur. We are continuously in contact with the Madison County Health department, which is in contact with local, state and federal officials. As circumstances change, so do our plans. If there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 locally, school closure will likely be one of the first considerations. We plan to have more information about opportunities and/or expectations of continued learning should a prolonged district closure occur. We are currently inundated with calls, email and concerns about our next steps. My commitment at this time is to the safety and wellbeing of all HCUSD No. 5 students and staff. Regarding field trips, extracurricular and curricular activities, we will make decisions based on the risk of exposure for our students and staff. If it becomes evident that participation increases the risk of exposure, we will suspend or cancel as needed. We certainly respect parents’ decisions should they desire to opt out of any activities at this time. Madison County Superintendents issued a joint press release yesterday as a result of a meeting with the Madison County Health Department. That release, as well as additional releases, will be available on the district website at www.highlandcusd5.org. Additional resources are available for families through the Madison County Health Department website at www.madisonchd.org As this situation continues to be fluid, we will be exploring options to meet students’ individual needs to ensure a continuity of education.
