Amber continually works hard to support our students, faculty, and our school with College Board tasks such as SAT, PSAT, NMSQT, and AP testing, National Merit Scholars, and AP Classroom. One of our students, Paul, was waiting in the office before heading home today. While waiting, he was able to follow along on Google Meets with his Geometry teacher, Mr. Joel Hawkins, who was teaching in-person and live-streaming to remote learners. Pretty fantastic.
Hawkins, who starting teaching at Highland in 1985, probably never dreamed he would instruct this way. In ‘85, he was likely using an overhead projector and chalk.
Our teachers and students continue to adapt during the pandemic in many ways and we are so proud of them.
Although it’s not been perfect during the pandemic and we continue to face challenges, our teachers, students, school, and community continue to step up.

Watch as our HHS Cheerleaders spread some holiday magic! #IHSA

Good Afternoon Highland CUSD 5 Families,
It has been a school year like no other. We have been in session 5 full weeks and are nearing the end of Quarter 1 which concludes Thursday, October 8. The end of the quarter opens the option for families to change their student's learning environment from Remote to In-Person or from In-Person to Remote for Quarter 2. We ask that only parents wishing to change do so in the form linked below. Please understand this selection will be in effect from Tuesday, October 13 through Tuesday, December 22.
We understood the many uncertainties and difficult decisions families were managing at the beginning of the year, and we were as responsive as possible to requests for changes during Quarter 1. However, those changes created many difficulties. During Quarter 2, building administrators will only consider learning environment change requests under extenuating circumstances. This form must be completed by a parent or guardian by September 25, 2020, at 4:00 PM for each student requesting a change.
For families wishing to CHANGE their current learning environment, please click the following link:

The first month of school has been quite the adventure. So many highs, some lows, and everything in between. It’s been really hard sometimes-no playbook and no roadmap. But through it all, we’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished and we will continue to do the best we can for our students. We will fight through adversity and rise above to prepare them for their future.
Whether you’re a student learning in-person, on full remote learning, or you’re currently on quarantine, we’re proud of you. We’re very thankful for an amazing faculty and staff who continue to focus on teaching and learning to do what’s best for students. They’re putting their heart and soul into teaching and it’s not easy during a pandemic. So much about teaching has changed since COVID-19 arrived and sometimes we’re learning as we go. It’s hard.
Our faculty and staff continue to plan and prepare to engage our students, clean our school and campus, and create a positive school culture for everyone. They care about what they do and continue to find ways to make things work. Our parents and community have been behind us as well, we feel it, and we appreciate it. We can’t do it without your support.
It’s truly been a team effort to accomplish what we have since school began on August 17. We know it’s not been perfect and there’s more work to do, but our community should be proud of what we’ve done.
Thank you to our students, our faculty and staff, and our community. Whatever happens moving forward, we will continue to do the best we can with the resources we have for everyone. Thanks for your continued patience, support, and understanding. We’ve got this. #BulldogStrong

Class of 2020- don’t forget your FAFSA- Free Application for Federal Student Aid needs to be filed by June 30th. www.studentaid.gov

Attention Class of 2020 graduating seniors!
Your Google Apps for Education account made by the school district will be closed and removed starting on June 30th.
Please be very aware of this date and what you need to do if you wish to save any email, documents, or other work you may have saved in your Google Apps for Education account.
If you are using your school account to communicate with colleges or other institutions, be sure to let them know another email address ahead of time, so you don't lose important communications. Be proactive by ensuring that college offices and other post high school entities have your permanent personal email account.
You can choose to transfer all or some of your school account via one of two methods:
Use the account transfer option to move content from your school account to your personal Gmail account. https://takeout.google.com/transfer
Use the account export option to save the entire contents of your Google Apps account, or just the parts of your account that you want to keep. Exports are contained in an archive file that you can open and work with. https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout
Any work that you do not choose to save will be irrevocably lost after June 30th. We cannot make exceptions to this, and we cannot retrieve any accounts or work after this date. It is solely your responsibility to determine if you wish to keep any work from your school account, and to export it before June 30th.
We recommend you use this on or near the last day of classwork. You may instead choose to manually export individual documents from your Drive, if you wish. However, do NOT use the Google share documents feature with your personal account as the shared link will no longer work after June 30th.
