PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome to Highland Middle School. We are very excited to begin our 2022-23 school year on Wednesday, August 17. Highland has embraced the Middle School Philosophy, since 1992, providing educational services to approximately 650 students in grades 6, 7, and 8. In this "school within a school" model, each grade level is organized into two teams - Red and Black - in order to meet the unique needs of young adolescents as they transition from childhood to young adults.

Highland Middle School is comprised of approximately 50 certified faculty members and 30 support staff who are committed to excellence in education. Collaboration and Teamwork are key components to this model. Students are assigned to a team of core academic teachers who share a common goal of meeting the educational, psychological, physical, and social needs of their students. Common planning time allows the teachers to collaborate on instruction, to meet individually with students as needed, and to communicate with parents and staff. The middle school structure increases the opportunities for flexible use of school time and the development and implementation of interdisciplinary units of instruction.

In addition to the core educational teams, we have an encore team of teachers to provide instruction in Art, Music, PE, Health, LA Plus, and Tech Integration. We have a daily advisory class which allows students to start each day with a small group of peers and activities are designed to focus on the middle school student's needs and interests. Band and Chorus are also offered for students interested in expanding their musical pursuits. A wide range of intramural activities, clubs, organizations, and community service opportunities provided by the staff at HMS help students discover their talents and interests as they navigate through their middle school years.

At HMS we are committed to our mission “Doing What’s Best for Kids” and we work hard to create a welcoming place for students to learn and grow. High expectations, student safety, and a positive learning environment impact student success.
