February 27, 2024
Greetings, HHS Students, Faculty, and Staff,
We are excited to share that Mr. Caleb Houchins was approved as the new Highland High School principal at the February 26th Highland CUSD #5 Board of Education meeting. Houchins will succeed Dr. Chris Becker, who will become Highland’s Assistant Superintendent in July. Houchins will begin his principal duties leading students and staff on July 1, 2024.
“The district is excited to welcome Mr. Houchins as Highland High School’s next principal. Caleb brings a wide range of knowledge and experience to the position, and we are excited about his leadership,” said Superintendent Mike Sutton.
Mr. Houchins has been at Highland High School for 21 years. He began as an administrator at HHS as the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director from 2015 to 2018 before becoming the Associate Principal in 2019. Houchins started teaching at Pleasant Hill High School in 2001 and moved to HHS in 2004. He taught American History, Health, Physical Education, and Government. Houchins earned an undergraduate degree at Western Illinois University, an M.A. in Sports Management from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and his Administration Certification in 2015 from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
His wife, Heidi, is a counselor at Triad High School. Together, they have two sons -- Cale and Nolan. Mr. Houchins enjoys playing golf, reading, and spending time with his family. He states, “Highland High School is a wonderful place and community. I am truly honored to work and surround myself with such amazing individuals every day. It is an honor to take on this added leadership role, and I am very excited and grateful to be moving into this new position.”
