Fiona Abbott, an ELA teacher at Highland Middle School, was selected for the Echoes & Reflections Advanced Summer Fellowship Seminar in Poland with Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center. The 10-day seminar gave 30 teachers from 21 states an in-depth learning experience about the Holocaust and Echoes & Reflections teaching resources, including visits to historical sites throughout Poland. These sites included ghettos in Warsaw, Lodz, Lublin, and Kraków, and extermination camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, Majdanek, and Chelmo. The team also visited various small villages where atrocities had occurred, as well as monuments and museums.
The program is designed for U.S. middle and high school teachers and aims to strengthen the knowledge and skills necessary to teach the complex history of the Holocaust effectively and appropriately to students. All participants completed research assignments before the trip about a specific victim of the Holocaust. Ms. Abbott also participated in a ceremony of remembrance at Auschwitz-Birkenau, in which she honored the 1.5 million Jewish children who perished in the Holocaust. Following the trip, participants completed post-seminar work, including bringing their experience to their students through creating lesson plans and activities, and arranging for Echoes & Reflections professional development in their region.
Ms. Abbott is incredibly grateful to Echoes and Reflections and Yad Vashem for sponsoring this amazing educational and emotionally enriching experience. The knowledge and personal connections made during this seminar will positively impact her teaching of the Holocaust to Highland students.
